Missão Xingu: Blaylocks in Brazil

Hello Friends,

Happy Eastertide! We pray that you all are doing well, and that this season you experince the freedom to experince the loss, sorrow, and tension of Good Friday along with the overwhelming joy of Easter Sunday!

We apologize for not getting you an update last month. We had a horrible stomach flu making its way through our household that took about 2.5 weeks for everyone to fully recover from. Then the following week was my final week of training at the School of Sustainable Faith!

I first encountered the ministry of spiritual direction while in grad school and fell in love with it. It felt like an answer to prayer and a missing piece of the puzzle! Me and 9 of my grad school cohort-mates decided that we wanted to continue on together and receive further training based on our experiences and the Holy Spirit’s leading. It has been an amazing journey that will prominently feature in the way we do evangelism, training, and leadership here in Joao Pessoa. I am incredibly grateful to these programs, and especially grateful to these amazing people that I have got to journey alongside over these last four years! Amanda and I are also glad for four years of schooling to finally end!

Our first Easter in João Pessoa is shaping up better than we expected it to when we arrived. One of the groups we work with is finishing up the Alpha Course and is looking to transition into a Discovery Group with the goal of ultimately forming a Igreja Simples. Our Discovery Group is moving to a different night for meetings in order to make it easier for more people who have shown some interest to come. Our team members are about to start another Alpha with a new group of believers. The mayor of the city has asked to have a meeting with our team to discuss how we might partner together for the good of the city!

On the family front: we are glad to be settled into a more normal routine of family life. Our kids have a Portuguese instructor that they like, and have been making great strides in their language learning. It’s been fun watching them be able to connect more with other kids and feel more confident in conversation. We think we have found a league sports activity for them to be involved in which will allow them the opportunity for them to make some friends and provide additional contact points with our community. Amanda and I are starting to make some friends as well.

Easter season is a special and busy time and we recognize that you are likely inundated with activities, devotionals, family plans, church services, and opportunities for deeper prayer and devotions. To that end we will save the additional updates and final discussion of our discernment process for our next newsletter. Know that we love you, appreciate you, and are praying for you!

Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again!

Love,

The Blaylock Family

Prayer Request

  1. Friends and language learning for our kiddos!

  2. For our groups to continue to grow in love, discipleship, and sustainably.

  3. A local politician I met has offered to have the city resource some things for us. Pray for us to have discernment on how to engage this opportunity.

  4. Discernment for which opportunities we need to devote our time, attention, and resources to.
