Derek and Amanda have both had a heart for Brazil since their college years. While preparing for graduation they both began pursuing missions opportunities in Brazil, however the organization that they were preparing to work with underwent a change in leadership and direction and they were unable to serve in Brazil at that time.
Derek earned a degree in Chemistry and Amanda in Education, and they entered the marketplace. Derek’s job took them to seven different cities in twelve years. In each city the Blaylocks always endeavored to find and serve in a local church as quickly as possible. They attended a variety of churches and gained broad experience in various worship styles, ministry philosophies, and outreach approaches. They gained experience in outreach, leading worship, teaching, preaching, children’s ministry, and benevolence work. Derek’s marketplace roles also afforded growth opportunities in administration, leadership, financial management, team dynamics, and public speaking.
When they moved to San Antonio, they were able to join the Vineyard family and finally felt as if they had found their tribe. Their local church trained them through Vineyard’s Residency Plus program, ordained them, and sent them out to launch Live Oak Vineyard in July of 2018. It was through this church and Vineyard’s Xingu partnership that the Blaylocks were able to finally reconnect with Brazil and began to feel the calling to pursue missions work yet again. After nearly 20 years of preparation and serving in various context they are excited to join the work of Xingu Mission!
