Pacajá is a small city in the midst of the Transamazon Highway. This region of the vast Amazon Forest was opened up for homesteading in the early 1970’s but really started to become occupied in the mid 1980’s. Today there are many small farmers scattered throughout the region, mostly cultivating beef cattle and cocoa plantations, the fruit from which cocoa powder and chocolate are derived.

The one road, the Federal Transamazon “Highway”, that runs through the region was only partially asphalted in 2014-2018, and as of today rickety wood bridges and poor roads still make transportation within the region an adventure. The Region is generally economically and educationally depressed.

Because of the vastness, and transportation and economic difficulties in the Transamazon Region, we started a church plant in the small City of Pacajá. The vision is to start a church-planting church in this region that is otherwise isolated from our church planting efforts to the west (Altamira) and to the east (Marabá). Though there are a number of churches in the Pacajá region, a large part of the population has grown to consider Christianity and the Church in general as irrelevant to their daily lives. The Pacajá Base was started because we saw how God was using the Xingu Mission to help people change how they think and feel about both Christianity and what it means to be part of a local church.

The Pacajá Base started in 2012 when a team consisting of Xingu Mission missionaries (the Wilson family) and Brazilian pastors (Ferreira and Fernanda, and their two daughters) moved from Altamira to Pacajá. They started to build relationships in the community and quickly formed a small group that has grown to become a church. Since then a group of lay leaders has been developed and Ferreira and Fernanda have assumed full leadership of the Pacajá church. They continue to develop strong relationships in the region and have started several small groups in the interior homesteading communities. Through relationship and modeling the Gospel in word and practice, many people are starting to believe that Christianity and the Church are relevant to their lives.

In early 2022, the Wilsons will be leaving the City of Pacajá to start this process all over again, in Palmas, in the State of Tocantins. This new work as well as transition efforts in Pacajá will be funded by donations to the Wilson Fund and the Pacajá/Palmas Fund.

Please prayerfully consider partnering with the Wilsons in prayer and financial support as they undertake this exciting adventure of bringing the Good News of Christ to people who have lost hope in the institution of the Church at large.
