Missão Xingu: Blaylocks in Brazil

Hello Friends,

Happy Eastertide! We pray that you all are doing well, and that this season you experince the freedom to experince the loss, sorrow, and tension of Good Friday along with the overwhelming joy of Easter Sunday!

We apologize for not getting you an update last month. We had a horrible stomach flu making its way through our household that took about 2.5 weeks for everyone to fully recover from. Then the following week was my final week of training at the School of Sustainable Faith!

I first encountered the ministry of spiritual direction while in grad school and fell in love with it. It felt like an answer to prayer and a missing piece of the puzzle! Me and 9 of my grad school cohort-mates decided that we wanted to continue on together and receive further training based on our experiences and the Holy Spirit’s leading. It has been an amazing journey that will prominently feature in the way we do evangelism, training, and leadership here in Joao Pessoa. I am incredibly grateful to these programs, and especially grateful to these amazing people that I have got to journey alongside over these last four years! Amanda and I are also glad for four years of schooling to finally end!

Our first Easter in João Pessoa is shaping up better than we expected it to when we arrived. One of the groups we work with is finishing up the Alpha Course and is looking to transition into a Discovery Group with the goal of ultimately forming a Igreja Simples. Our Discovery Group is moving to a different night for meetings in order to make it easier for more people who have shown some interest to come. Our team members are about to start another Alpha with a new group of believers. The mayor of the city has asked to have a meeting with our team to discuss how we might partner together for the good of the city!

On the family front: we are glad to be settled into a more normal routine of family life. Our kids have a Portuguese instructor that they like, and have been making great strides in their language learning. It’s been fun watching them be able to connect more with other kids and feel more confident in conversation. We think we have found a league sports activity for them to be involved in which will allow them the opportunity for them to make some friends and provide additional contact points with our community. Amanda and I are starting to make some friends as well.

Easter season is a special and busy time and we recognize that you are likely inundated with activities, devotionals, family plans, church services, and opportunities for deeper prayer and devotions. To that end we will save the additional updates and final discussion of our discernment process for our next newsletter. Know that we love you, appreciate you, and are praying for you!

Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again!

Love,

The Blaylock Family

Prayer Request

  1. Friends and language learning for our kiddos!

  2. For our groups to continue to grow in love, discipleship, and sustainably.

  3. A local politician I met has offered to have the city resource some things for us. Pray for us to have discernment on how to engage this opportunity.

  4. Discernment for which opportunities we need to devote our time, attention, and resources to.

Loving outside the walls.

One thing we believe and put into action at Xingu Mission is that the love of God is to be shared outside the walls of a church building.  We engage in activities such as free dental care, water filters, prayer and conversation in the hospital, ESL classes, food baskets for the poor, soup for those living in the streets, to name a few.

Robert (Bob) Lesher operates as an assistant pastor, but without the title.  He assists Leo and Leda.  Last year we shared how one of the churches in Macapá was passed to the leadership of Leo and Leda.  Releasing a church plant into Brazilian leadership is our goal.  Leo and Leda are growing in their roles as senior pastors and doing well.  Bob serves them in various functions such as church treasurer, bass guitar player, and preaching, but his passion is in serving and facilitating their ministry, “Love in Action.”

Love in Action is an outreach to their local community.  The church community goes out to the streets and offers a snack, something to drink, a listening ear, a hug, and prayer.  These are very basic actions to let the community know that God loves them, and the church is there to serve the community.  The joy spread through this love in action is visible on the faces.  We applaud Leo, Leda, Bob and the Vineyard Macapá community for loving outside the walls of the church building to bring reconciliation and renewal to their community.

Pray for Bob and Kingdom breakthroughs through this outreach.  Thank you for being a blessing!  May you be blessed today!

Retreats!

Retreats are often seen merely as vacations, but in reality, they offer a valuable opportunity to step away from our daily routines of life and provide the space for reflection, relaxation, connection, and rejuvenation.  They allow us to reflect on our beliefs, practices, purposes, and vision, leading to an exploration of aspects of our lives that may need attention or a fresh perspective.  Through shared experiences and like-minded thinking, we draw strength from one another.  Withdrawing from the stresses and strains of everyday life fosters deeper relaxation and helps us recharge for the journey ahead.  Additionally, retreats infuse a bit of fun, enhancing both relaxation and community bonding.

The Xingu Mission held its annual field missionary retreat.  We gathered for three days filled with connection and relaxation, with a particular focus on unity, as our church planting efforts are spread across various locations.  It is easy to overlook the challenges faced by others when each location has its own demands.  Thus, we aim to be proactive and intentional in maintaining unity and connection among our missionaries, even across distances.  A special thanks to Joel Seymour for his contributions to the care of our missionaries this year!

Other notable retreats: The Macapá church and the Belém church.

In Macapá, Vineyard Viva and Vineyard Macapá organized a joint retreat, attracting around 70 attendees.  The focus was on learning to find freedom from ongoing sin.  The event was over a Friday night and Saturday, featuring teachings, interactive games, and a meaningful time for baptisms. These sister churches cherish their time together and collaborated to foster community building and learning.  Stepping away from the day-to-day stresses to focus on freedom was a blessing to these churches.

In Belém, Vineyard Belém conducted its first retreat at a house outside the city, with approximately 40 participants.  The event began on Sunday and concluded on Tuesday afternoon, centered on the theme of legacy.  The participation and dedication of many contributed to the joy of this church plant during its inaugural retreat.  Participants felt rejuvenated in their faith through engagement with the Word of God and enjoyed the fun of community building.

Separating time for a retreat focused on fellowship with God and our spiritual community brings transformative blessings.  We are grateful for what God is doing in us and through us.  We pray you are blessed as well.

Church Growth

We are blessed by your prayers and support!  Here is how the church is growing:

Within the last month, we held a class where we shared our vision, values, and ministry practices.  Most of our community attended, even those who have been coming awhile.  Sharing our purpose and direction provided an opportunity to discern whether this community of faith is where they want to serve.  It was an encouraging time as they formally shared their desire to be a part of what we are doing here in Palmas.

During this class, a few people shared their desire to serve musically in the area of worship.  So, we held a follow-up short training specifically focused on our vision, values, and ministry practices for worship.  We are excited to be integrating three talented musicians into our worship team.

We have also started small groups, one for women and one for men.  Small groups provide the context to build community and develop spiritual and personal growth through a more intimate setting.

It is a joy to watch the growth happening and we pray for God to bring more people into our sphere so we can continue to share God’s love!

Outside the Walls

In February, we participated in an outreach with our sister church in Taquaralto (southern part of our city) to serve that community. Together we hosted and provided support to a dental team from Brasilia.  This team, Projeto Semear Sorrisos (Project Seeding Smiles), is a group of dentists and assistants that donate their time and services to give free dental care to needy areas. The project is organized and led by members of our sister church in Brasilia.  In four and a half days 174 patients were treated including 362 restorations, 52 extractions, and 121 other procedures.  It was a heavy schedule but a joyous time serving together and helping many people.

Please, pray that God will direct the right people towards us, and that we will be have the discernment to receive and care for them well.

Missionary Care Retreat

In February we participated in a missionary retreat. Once a year, the Xingu Mission holds a retreat to be proactive in caring spiritually, mentally, and emotionally for the missionaries and families.  With an increase in the geographical distance between missionaries, this retreat was focused on unity.  We were blessed by our speaker Joel, and it was a time of connection with God and each other, rest, and fun.  We love our mission family.

Prayer

Please continue praying that God will connect us with key people and give us direction as we seek to guide this group and form a community of Christ followers.

Pray for divine encounters for us to demonstrate the love of God.

Pray for God’s provision and discernment as we work through some document issues and adapt our new meeting space to meet the needs of the church.

Blessings in Christ,

Keith and Marsha Wilson

The church plants in Belém and Palmas may be just sprouts, but they are growing and participating in the God’s Kingdom expansion.  A great aspect of church planting is the values and principles being seeded from the very beginning creating vision of being a church of outward focused action.

Vineyard Belém, led by Steve and Elba Dolan, held a welcome class allowing those attending to understand the theology, values, principles and ministry practices of the church.  Following this class they had 22 officially join the church and five people were baptized, including a father and daughter.  The public declaration of baptism warms the heart as people show outwardly the healing and freedom gained inwardly.  It is exciting to see the healing and growth happening in this church plant.

Vineyard Palmas, led by Keith and Marsha Wilson, held the same welcome class and had 4 officially join the church.  This small church recently reached outside its doors by providing food baskets for 5 other churches in heavily needy areas.  The church also supported and participated in Semear Sorrisos (seeding smiles), a dental team that provides services to needy areas, where free dental services were provided to 170 people including 47 children.

We do what we do out of love for God and a desire for others to know God’s love for them.  Your support in us fulfilling this role here in Brazil is greatly appreciated!

God bless you!

2025 – already?

This new year started with exciting newness for the works here in Northern Brazil.  Along with the new year are visions for and opportunities of leadership formation and growth, relationship building, church growth, and church planting.  Check out the brief highlights below:

The Blaylocks are on location in João Pessoa.  They have returned from home assignment and are administrating the logistics of moving locations.  Even though this can bring many headaches, logistics also bring connections and help understand culture and context as one integrates into the new community which they will serve and plant a church.

The Dolans in Belém have also moved their church to their own rented commercial space.  They have been receiving many visitors just out of curiosity, creating the opportunity for new relationships to form.  It also provides space for a children’s classroom.

Bob Lesher has stepped into new ministry roles.  Bob learned how to play bass guitar and is now participating in the church band playing worship music.  He has also stretched his personal boundaries and has added preaching at Sunday services to serving his church.

The Meyers have a unique newness to the church, Vineyard Viva, they pastor.  They are seeing a baby boom, creating new challenges of caring for the growing families.

The Wilsons in Palmas have moved the church out of their home and into a rented commercial space.  This allows better visibility and new connections as well as space to grow and develop. Changes will include a space for a children’s classroom, and a potential location for ESL classes.

Praise God with us for these new and good changes.  Pray with us as we take each new step in furthering the Kingdom of God here in Brazil.  Partner with us as we face new challenges found in change.

May God bless you in this new year!

Wilson’s December 2024 Update

Newness!

Thank you for your continued prayers!

Over the last few months, there have been several exciting events as we slowly move forward as a new church.  First,  we have two young professional families interested in being part of the church! They seem to be mature Christians who are talented and seem to be humbly interested in helping the church grow. So we are very encouraged by that.

Secondly, we have now rented a commercial space. We are already meeting in it though our signage and some modifications are still pending.  Our group is encouraged by the change and we can see subtle signs indicating that, in their minds, we are more of a “real church” now. This step brings another level of organization to our basic functions, such as utilizing sound and AV systems, and more adequate reception and seating arrangements.

In November, we held our first special worship service jointly with our sister church in  Taquaralto, a community on the city’s outskirts. It was a wonderful time to seek more of the Lord’s presence and help our church understand the relevance of worship through music. As we planned the event we anticipated renting a conference room, then everything worked out for us to rent our new facility, so it was our first event there!

Finally, we had the honor of hosting our first short-term team to Palmas. It was from our sending church in Columbus, Ohio. Teams provide several opportunities. They inspire a curiosity in the local community that though sometimes subtle, is significant. They also inspire a sense of expectation, again which is often subtle. Together these factors create special opportunities for us to engage in ministry. Sometimes the activity becomes more relevant because of this curiosity, like the conversational  English and Thanksgiving dinner times we had with this team. Other times the team provides the willing workers needed to make a ministry event viable, like the prayer in the park event we did with this team. Finally, sometimes the expectation related to their presence provides an opportunity for a non-routine ministry time, like the midweek service we held at the Taquaralto church.

Please, pray that God will direct the right people towards us, and that we will be have the discernment to receive and care for them well.

Prayer

Please continue praying that God will connect us with key people and give us direction as we seek to guide this group and form a community of Christ followers.

Pray for God’s provision and discernment as we adapt our new meeting space to meet the needs of the church.

Blessings in Christ,

Keith and Marsha Wilson
