Xingu Mission Field Report January 2023

A joyous and blessed 2023 to you! This monthly field report highlights the Dolan’s move to the capital city of Belém.  May you be inspired to further God’s plan in your life.
Our mission is to plant churches and train leaders.  But why and what does that mean to us?  We use the term plant church because like a plant it is something to be nurtured and grown.  We are not called to just share our faith with others, but to nurture relationship, invest time and energy in people to build missional communities as the Holy Spirit transforms lives and their personal stories.  Church is about this….people and the community: sowing love, cultivating hope, and overflowing joy.

We mentioned a couple of times last year about the Dolans being in transition to move to the capital city of Belém, Pará.  On January 2, 2023 the church that they have been pastoring for 19 years sent them off with hearts full of thanksgiving and lots of tears.  A few of the regional leaders came to bless the Dolans.  The church gathered around and prayed for them.  Churches planting churches.

They’ve moved and are getting settled in.  What now?  Now the Dolans will begin the slow process of building relationships; getting out into their community to know and be known by those around them, to be a living example of love, joy, and hope we have through Jesus. We know and live in the hope that when we do our part by planting, and watering (building relationships and nurturing them), God will grow his kingdom.

Leaving is hard. Starting anew is hard. It is part of our mission and vision. It`s an adventure with a purpose.

Please be in prayer for the Dolans. Please pray for divine appointments and that God leads them in this new church plant.  Also consider becoming part of their team in something new!

May you be a blessing as God blesses you!

Xingu Mission Field Report February 2023

Xingu Website
Happy February to you! This monthly field report highlights the the relocation of a church in Macapá and the excitement of new opportunities.  May you be filled with joy today!
Vineyard Viva in Macapá has moved!  At its inception in 2017, the leadership in Macapá desired to plant a church downtown. Financially unable to do that, they planted in an outlying neighborhood.  Growth of the church and its location was no longer compatible.  It was time to relocate.

Relocation to the downtown area is a giant step forward for Vineyard Viva.  We believe and hope for a more vital and vibrant community through this relocation.  The improved location, the quality of the facility, and the easier access will revitalize their energy to reach outside the walls.

The new location has a main room, a smaller room set up like a café for mingling, two rooms for children, a kitchen, bathrooms, and a storage room. There is actually more space in the building, but it would need more renovations for the space to be usable.

The inauguration service, viewed in the photos, held more than double their usual number of people, surpassing their expectations. The Holy Spirit was present and did what he does.  After the service many spilled out into the café to enjoy fellowship together.  It was a joyful time, and many visitors returned the following week.

Relocation can be challenging, but it is an excellent time to remember, refocus and renew the ministry.  Relocation is a time for clear vision, new strategies, excitement, and new opportunities to love and serve.  We join Christopher and Denise Meyer, Bob Lesher, and Derek and Amanda Blaylock, and their families in this exciting new phase for the church planting efforts in Macapá.

We asked for funding for this relocation back in December and want to thank those that gave, making the relocation possible.  However, there is still a need. Some things were left undone, and some equipment was borrowed. Please consider partnering with Macapá in this new step of their growth. Giving to the Altamira base for Macapá will support their efforts.

Join with us in praising God for his advancement of this work!

Important updates

November 2022
from Christopher & Denise Meyer

Dear Friends and Family,

Thank you so much for your prayers and support. I want to update you about some exciting things going on here in Macapá, but also share some important needs that we have at the moment.

Since Denise and I arrived here in Macapá, our work and responsibilities have changed dramatically. We started here 7 years ago assisting another pastor at a small church (Vineyard Macapá). We then planted a second church (Vineyard Viva). Then a year-and-a-half ago we were asked by our leadership to pastor Vineyard Macapá after their pastor stepped down. We now find ourselves Senior Pastors of two growing churches and are overseeing the mission and other missionaries here in Macapá. Even though we are presently working through a plan to hand off some of these responsibilities, this is our present reality.

With the growth of our responsibilities and ministry, we have also seen our monthly ministry costs grow significantly. From your monthly donations, Denise and I receive a fixed monthly amount for our personal and family needs, but we also receive funds into an account that is solely used for ministry and benevolent needs. These ministry costs have tripled in the last few years because of the size and scope of our responsibilities. Because of these growing costs, and also because we have lost some of our key monthly supporters due to retirement, we have been struggling to cover our ministry costs every month and have been consistently seeing more money going out than what is coming in.

I want to take this opportunity to share some of the exciting things God is doing here in Macapá, and also share some of our vision for the future and ask that you would prayerfully consider supporting our ministry here.

Vineyard Viva

As we stated in our last update, Vineyard Viva was in search for a new location. Our present building can only hold around 50-55 people and we are quickly running out of space. I am happy to announce that we found our new church building! The space and location exceeded our expectations! It is a much larger space that we can grow into, a much better location, and the rent is within our church’s budget. It is so much more than what we thought was presently possible. Because the space is much bigger than our present church, there are many updates and renovations that we are presently working on (and saving toward) to get space ready for services.

The new church building is located right next to downtown and there is a large young adult population in the area. God has also blessed Vineyard Viva with many young musicians and artists. Our desire in ministry is to always follow God’s lead and to be conscience of what he’s already doing. Therefore, one of the things we are working on in the new building is a café where we will be holding small events/shows/exhibits in order to draw the area’s large young adult population.

Vineyard Macapá
As I’ve already mentioned above, our desire is to follow what God is already doing. With Vineyard Macapá, we have a large population of young kids in the neighborhood that are always hanging around the church. We decided to invest in these little ones.

One huge recent blessing is the money Vineyard Church of Delaware County (our sending church) raised to help us buy air conditioners for the two children’s classrooms we had built. The classrooms will not just be used during our weekend services but will also be used throughout the week. We already have one small group that we started just for kids and are hoping to start more.

This is a present-day picture of us. Our ministry isn’t the only thing that has grown!

If you have any questions, concerns or would like more clarity on what we have shared, please email us. We would love to set up a time to talk and answer any questions you have.

In His Service,
Christopher & Denise

The Meyer – August 2022 Newsletter

August 2022 Newsletter
from Christopher & Denise Meyer

Dear Friends and Family,

Thanks you so much for your prayers and support. Please let us know if there is any way we can be praying for you!

We have had an eventful few months! I wanted to give you a quick update of some things going on.

New Missionary Family

On July 14th Derek, Amanda and their four children arrived here in Macapá, and joined the Xingu Mission family. We had been anxiously awaiting their arrival and we’re so excited to help them get started on their new journey.

When new missionaries arrive, they are basically starting from scratch. They only bring what they can fit in their suitcases. There is so much to resolve once they have arrived. They have no place to live, no furniture, no phone number, no bank account, no internet, no Brazilian documents, no vehicle, no understanding of where to find things in the city, and generally have little to no ability to speak the language. This is not to mention the fact that they are extremely dependent on others to help them. After three weeks in which the Blaylocks stayed with Denise and me, they were able to rent the house right next door to our house for them to live in! This has been great because they have their own space, but Denise and I are close by.

When I started my missionary life, I was a single guy with no children and it still seemed like a whirlwind. With Derek and Amanda’s family of six, I can’t even imagine! It would be really easy for them to feel completely overwhelmed with this first step, but they have been troopers with great attitudes and a willingness to try things even without much language. Denise and I believe Derek and Amanda will be a great asset to the Xingu Mission as they adjust to the culture and become more proficient with the language. Their presence is a definite answer to prayer.

Plans for the Future

We have many exciting things coming up here in Macapá. Below is a brief summary of some of what we are working on and praying about. If you could keep these things in your prayers, it would mean a great deal to us.

Assistant Pastors

Pastoring the two churches on the opposite sides of town, along with overseeing the mission and missionaries that are here in Macapá with two young children, has been a heavy load for us. Both Denise and I are tired. After a lot of prayer and conversations with our Vineyard Brasil leadership, we have decided that in the upcoming months we will be licensing assistant pastors at both Vineyard Viva and at Vineyard Macapá. We want to emphasize that it is not only our need for help that has driven this decision, but the evidence of pastoral gifting and a clear call that we have seen on these four individuals.

Fred and Aline who will be licensed as assistant pastors at Vineyard Viva

Looking for a new location for Vineyard Viva

Vineyard Viva is currently looking to move to a new location. We are quickly outgrowing our current location and would like to be in a building where there is room to grow. Finding a place which has a location that works for our members and also has rent within our budget has been a little difficult. Please keep Vineyard Viva in your prayers as we continue our search.

Building a Children’s Wing for Vineyard Macapá

We have been blessed with a large number of kids at Vineyard Macapá. Presently our only option for Sunday school is to have our children meet outside in the open air. If it’s raining, we have no place for the classes. Even if the weather is nice, because we have our services at night, mosquitoes are a problem. We really want to invest in the children in our church, so we are now looking into options for building a small Children’s Wing. Please keep this in your prayers as we begin to plan.

Additional Prayer Requests

1) Please pray for the health of our family. For the last 3 months, our family has been continuously sick. We’ve had COVID, the flu, stomach viruses, pneumonia, laryngitis and many other odd sicknesses.

2) Please pray for our financial support. Because our family and ministry has grown, our financial expenses have also grown. Additionally, we have recently lost some long time supporters because of retirement. Please pray for God’s direction and provision.

3) Continue to pray for our house situation. As I mentioned in my last update, we have a house that we are desiring to purchase. We are still waiting for all the documents for the house purchase to be cleared and approved by a judge. This can sometimes take awhile.

We appreciate your prayers and support, and love hearing from you.

Xingu Mission Field Report August 2022

Xingu Website
Hello,

Happy August from the Xingu Mission! This monthly Field Report highlights new missionary life with our new missionaries hitting the field in Macapa. May it inspire you!
_______________________________________________________________

On July 14th Derek and Amanda Blaylock and their 4 children Selah, Amaris, Josiah and Adalee joined our mission on the field.  They are starting out in the city of Macapa, Amapa alongside missionaries Christopher and Denise Meyer and Bob Lesher.

Accepting the call of God to become a full-time missionary is not an easy decision. Leaving the conveniences of life in your home country, leaving family and friends, uprooting your whole family and moving to an entirely different country with its different culture and different language has it is tests and trials.  So what truly sustains a missionary in long term field work is not abilities or a desire to do good, but rather holding strong to obeying the call of God on their lives and understanding God’s heart for the nations.

The absolute trust, belief and dependence on God based from an intimate relationship with Him leads us to be obedient to His call and is what sustains a missionary through culture shock; being stripped of everything you know like how to make people laugh, how to bank, and what is the name of that fruit. Although you want to jump in and make a difference as fast as you can, you become very toddler like as you learn language and culture and make lots of faux pas and stumbles along the way.

Learning your host country’s language is foundational for obvious reasons. If you can’t speak the language, you’ll have a hard time sharing the Gospel.  It needs to be looked at as the beginning of ministry.  By pressing hard into language study, you can rebuild these skills and prepare yourself for deeper, more effective ministry in the future.

One also needs in the words and perspective of Derek: Humility – We are guests here.  There is a lot of cultural knowledge that comes from tough lessons and many generations of experimentation. Lean into the Brazilian way of doing things and let a more complete understanding come later.  Be teachable – Every encounter, every conversation, and yes – even every long line you stand in waiting to get something signed or approved is an opportunity to learn something about your new neighbors, practice the language, or notice the Holy Spirit in action. Anticipation – Anticipate that God is going to do some extraordinary things with you and on your behalf.

It was said once that “Your goal for the first term is to survive and want to come back.”  Although that wording seems harsh, there is a bit of truth to it.  As for the Blaylocks, their first term goal is “To work on transitioning our family to our new home in a healthy and life-giving way, continuing to learn a beautiful new language, spending lots of time getting to know Brazilians as a people, and building relationships with new friends and family in the community.”

As for how the Blaylocks are doing since landing on the field, they find it surreal after the time spent building up to coming.  They feel warmly welcomed and are glad to be here.

Please pray for the Blaylocks and their transition as new missionaries.  Thank you and God bless you!
