First, world cup season in Brazil is an absolute blast. The futbol culture, the way the entire city shuts down to cheer for our team, hearing the entire neighborhood roar when we score a goal and seeing the fireworks exploding – its all quite an amazing and deeply communal spectacle. Finally, after 100 days of uprootedness and bureaucracy we have moved into our house. We are starting to settle in, and get back to a more normal rhythm of life and ministry. We have already started to get together with some of the neighbors for meals, and our kids are making connections. Our immigration paperwork is under review now, and we both expect and are praying for a favorable outcome which will see us gaining permanent residence status. At Vineyard Renovar we have had to say goodbye recently- to some for only a temporary time as they visit other cities or countries for work purposes. Others – we had to see goodbye for good as they have moved to a new city for work or to start medical school! And yet in the midst of that – there is a stirring here, a desire for deeper intimacy and discipleship, that is seeing folks step forward to both take on more of the life and rhythms of the church, and to partner with God in what is He is doing in the places where they live, work, learn, and play! Its been encouraging to see these wonderful people step into these things because of deepening intimacy with the Trinity. Its the beginning of a new season. Having moved to a new neighborhood we start right back at the beginning of the what we call the “Jornada Missionária” – the missionary pathway that we seek to train everyone in who has an interest in deeper intimacy with Jesus through joining Him in what He is already doing. This first step is crucial- its the step of extraordinary prayer and fasting as we seek person’s of peace in a new location and begin to pay attention to the life and rhythms of the new place. He once wrote an article for the publication Theology Today (Volume 29, Number 4, Jan 1, 2973) called The Sanctification Gap. For me it was an assigned article in grad school. In it, he writes the following quote which struck me deeply and sticks with me to this day: “When they (Charismatics) commence a venture, it is with hours of prayer, while with ordinary Evangelicals it is with hours of talk and organization. The result is often that the Charismatics achieve supernatural results, while the rest of us obtain what is organizable.” The thing is – I don’t want to achieve results that are only merely organizable. Even worse, I don’t want ministry to merely flow from overwork and the result of strenuous effort. If I get to do this thing at all, I want it to flow FROM a place of intimacy and a depth of abiding with God such that the ministry is overflow and not overwork, and that it comes out of place of hearing His voice clearly and obeying Him. That comes through a life rooted and grounded in prayer. So much so that I think we would need to classify ministry efforts such as these as just as much a prayer movement as it is anything else. The opening verse of 1 Timothy chapter 2 says this: “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.” First of all, of first importance, to begin with – start here. So, Paul (inspired by the Holy Spirit) says. Likewise – this is the first step for us on the Jornada Missionária. Not with a neighborhood canvas, or a marketing strategy, or even with a felt needs survey. But with prayer: prayer that allows me to breathe in my identity first and foremost a God’s beloved child and a disciple of Lord Jesus, prayer that my eyes will be opened, my ears would hear, and prayers of silence and listening. And then doing these things on prayer walks in our new neighborhood.
