Derek and Amanda have both had a heart for Brazil since their college years. While preparing for graduation, they each began pursuing missions opportunities in Brazil. However, the organization they were preparing to work with underwent a change in leadership and direction, preventing them from serving in Brazil at that time.
Derek earned a degree in Chemistry and Amanda in Education, and together they entered the marketplace. Over the course of twelve years, Derek’s job took their family to seven different cities. In each new place, the Blaylocks made it a priority to quickly find and actively serve in a local church. They attended a variety of churches and gained broad experience with different worship styles, ministry philosophies, and outreach approaches.
During these years, they were involved in outreach, leading worship, teaching, preaching, children’s ministry, and benevolence work. Derek’s marketplace roles also gave him opportunities to grow in administration, leadership, financial management, team dynamics, and public speaking.
When they moved to San Antonio, they were able to join the Vineyard family and finally felt as if they had found their tribe. Their local church trained them through Vineyard’s Residency Plus program, ordained them, and sent them out to launch Live Oak Vineyard in July of 2018. It was through this church, and Vineyard’s partnership with the Xingu, that the Blaylocks were finally able to reconnect with Brazil and began to sense a renewed calling to pursue missions work.
After nearly 20 years of preparation and service in various contexts, they are excited to join the work of Xingu Mission! Derek and Amanda have four children: Adalee, Josiah, Amaris, and Selah.
